SoulWaxThe Charlotte. LeicesterReview by HoBo Neil As Hobo minion, I was thrilled to be asked by Head honcho Hobo to review the latest beat combo grazing the tranquil plains of Leicester. In doing so, I braved possibly the hottest gig venue this side of Hades. So flame proof panties in place…. In the rock who’s who 2001 edition, imagine a chapter ‘Belgian mega stars A-Z’. It wouldn’t, it couldn’t happen, but it has! Yes those crazy Belgians have pulled off the rock n’ roll coup of the millennium and given us the mighty Soulwax. Possibly their finest export since 'pissing mannequin' keyrings. Tonight we are lucky enough to be treated to a fine set, despite the furnace of a packed Charlotte. Opener ‘Funny’ matches their perfectly twisted Flemish minds by adding freakily timed drum loops and the sort of twin guitar assault that makes your dad take notice and say "not bad are they?" Speaking the international language of rock was never going to be difficult for Soulwax. With tracks like ‘Conversation Intercom’ and its bluesy slide guitar, to the beautifully pert disco break in ‘Saturday’, they manage to combine perfect rock posturing with a genuine sense of the absurd. Defying the almost laughable conditions at chez Charlotte, they whip everyone into frenzy with their closer and current single ‘Too many D.J’s’ which has some ace beat boxing from bandy legged guitar slinger David. Soulwax’s performance tonight proves beyond any doubt, that, as their album title also suggests, being an ‘ordinary band’ is indeed much against everyone’s advice!
