Super Furry Animals

Rock City Nottingham 01.10.01

Human beat box lives on in the form of Killer Kela who provided support and was like the guy from police academy. Very impressive we thought. He made every sound with his mouth !

Before the SFA came on video screens showed the boys running around backstage in a Spinal Tap esque can't find the stage way. Which was amusing. Air horns and dry ice signaled the arrival of SFA, but starting the show with a lackluster version of Ice Hockey Hair seemed a bad choice. Things seemed subdued for the first few songs. Maybe it was a Monday night thing. Only one thing for it, time to get in the mosh pit. HoBo Dan was there in the mosh which was a welcome sight as always. It was the nicest mosh pit I’d ever been in. No one was out to get the most mental of the gig award, which made a nice change.

Things picked up though when Juxtaposed with U was played. HoBo B said he could see Gruffs teeth falling out due to the vocoder frequency!

The surround sound wasn’t all that effective, at least where I was standing anyways. The lights were good and videos accompanied every song. I especially like the one with the nice little plane flying around a cartoon world. They finished with one of the lovely Mwng tunes and went off leaving techno menace Cian Ciran to try and send everyone insane with his Arnie (best mind fuck yet?) remix which was about 10 minutes long and very mental.

There seemed to be a strange apocalyptic feeling to the songs and images in this current climate of terrorist attacks and threat of war. It does have the feel of an end of the world album. What do they know that we don’t?

All in all a jolly good show.
