Hobo Recommended Products

The Flashing Hobo’s Summer essentials!

Summer is here and you lovely people want to enjoy yourselves. Well whether you’re going on holiday and need a good read for the plane journey, cruising round in your car listening to tunes, or sitting in a cold cellar wearing a gimp mask, we have some recommendations to help you achieve total enjoyment.

California. Mr Bungle

The third album from Mike Patton’s (ex Faith No More) original band is the Hobo’s most essential summer album. This can be heard pouring from the windows of Hobo Towers almost constantly. So many musical styles are present here; at times sounding like Prince or Elton John other times like Korn, but ultimately like none of them. It’s been said that this album is akin to “tuning through the channels of AM radio and hearing bits of all your favorite tunes”. Though presumably whoever said that must have meant American AM radio cos English AM radio is shit!

HoBo says, “Sell your grandmother to buy this if you have to”

The Sweet Forever by George P  Pelecanos

G.Q magazine called Pelecanos “The coolest writer in America”, and not without reason. The Sweet Forever looks like a dodgy run of the mill crime novel, but don’t be fooled by the cover. It is a hip novel with a very cool feel. Pelecanos introduces so many new characters in the first few chapters with unlikely but memorable names like Dimitri, Karras, Clarence, Tate, Eddie, Golden and Short Man Munroe that you wonder whether you will remember them all. But remember them and care what happens to them you do, and by the time the action kicks in about two thirds of the way through, you can’t put it down. More a tale of an American city in the eighties than a book about one particular crime. Like Miami Vice but good!

HoBo says “Thought you wouldn’t like crime novels eh?”

Pet Sounds. The Beach Boys.

Not, as it sounds, a stereo recording of household pets for the clinically mad, but perhaps the best album ever made. In truth more a lead Beach Boy Brian Wilson solo effort than a full on Beach Boys record. Not the cheesy stuff of 'Surfin USA' or 'California Girls', but an album that is somehow introspective and uplifting at the same time. This is the album that inspired the Beatles to make Sgt Peppers in an attempt to better it. 'Wouldn’t It Be Nice' kicks off the album and it only gets better from there. Unfortunately halfway through writing this appraisal I sat on my Pet Sounds c.d. snapping it clean in half. Can you super glue c.d.?

HoBo says “My favorite album”

Sleepy Hollow (dir. Tim Burton)

Starring, as you would expect of a spooky Tim Burton film, Jonny Depp, Sleepy Hollow is an old American folk tale that until now has meant pretty much zero to the rest of the world. Depp plays Ichabod Crane, a policeman from New York who is sent to the quiet village of Sleepy Hollow to investigate a murder. Before long he is in a world of shit, doing battle with a headless horseman who chops off heads pretty much all of the time. This is a great film, no matter that no one in the Dutch settlement speaks Dutch or has a Dutch accent; this is a top film and a visual treat. A folk tale bought to the big screen with all the atmosphere and visual quality we’ve come to expect from TB.

HoBo says “I’m Scared”

Hooray for Boobies. The Bloodhound gang

Like the Beastie Boys first and probably best album License To Ill, Hooray For Boobies is going to offend some people and delight others, depending on how seriously you choose to take it. When I first put the c.d. in the Hobo office c.d. player I was looking through the waste paper basket for the receipt. However I persevered and after a few listens it clicked. This album is funny, and also very good. Jimmy Pop’s lyrics are very narrative and humorous, which in this time of wailing Radiohead clones makes a nice change. It’s probably not going to be in my c.d. player in two years time but I don’t think they would expect it to be. A top summer album.

HoBo says “Rude and Immature, but fun!”

Buena Vista Social Club

It’s a summer night. You’ve had a barbecue in the yard. Everyone’s a tad worse for wear for one reason or another. It’s midnight and Slayer is no longer the mood music required. You need the above album to finish the evening in style and to impress your friends. The Buena Vista Social Club is a group of old guys who smoke cigars talk about ladies and play cool music. What more do you need to know?

HoBo says, “My granddad never did that!”

MWNG Super Furry Animals

Mwng is the latest album from the ever-fresh Welsh group who can’t seem to put a foot wrong. All the lyrics are sung in Welsh, but don’t let that put you off. Like singer Gruff said “I listen to a lot of Brazilian, French, German and Japanese music that I don’t grasp straight away. If I listen to a Nirvana record I don’t understand most of their lyrics cos he’s just screaming away, but I understand the passion in his voice”. Bits of this remind me of the end theme music from the Sweeney, and that alone should be reason enough to own it. Super Furries are one of the best bands in the world today so add them to your collection if you haven’t already.

HoBo says “Super Furries make me happy”

Perfect Dark (Rare)

The year is 2023 and Joanna Dark is on her first mission. To rescue Dr. Carroll, to shoot loads of guards, go under the sea, stealth her way around office blocks, meet aliens, do secret stuff and generally be dead hard. With more weapons than anyone could reasonably want and missions aplenty, this has to be the game of the year. Plus, the Hobo’s very own Editors John and Ross appear in this game, so buy it tomorrow, even if you don’t own a Nintendo.

HoBo says, “Makes me feel like a secret agent”
