The Probation OfficerQuick ReviewThe Probation Officer starring Steve Coogan British comedy films are a strange affair. Sure there are timeless classics like Withnail & I or Holy Grail, but sadly more often than not they reek of Morons from outer space. Ill conceived, weak gags and usually starring a TV comedy star or two of the time. The probation Officer is such a film. It was always going to be really. Steve Coogan is one of the best comedians to have graced our tv screens in the past, but stick him in a Brit Flick (same with Eddie Izzard) and the results are less than desirable. I won't even divulge the plot as it is so ludicrous, so nebulous it really could have been written by a 14 year old. And stealing a visual gag from Gregorys Girl is hardly groundbreaking. Suffice to say the Probation Officer is an moldy loaf of a film, but with some good bits left to toast. The roller coaster vomit scene is pretty damn funny even if levered in for no reason, much like the appearance of Omar Shariff later on. There is also a lovely young lady (steady, Ed) who plays the part of the juvenile delinquent and may be a bright young prospect and Coogan himself raises a few laughs just by being Steve Coogan, much like a British Jim Carrey. Hire it, but don't buy it. HoBo_John HoBo Says " What's wrong with Gregory girl ya fukin bashtard" |
