Mendoza have been round since September 2000, and have recently supported a number of bands including the Llama Farmers. Their first release was If I Had To and they now have released a follow up EP called Upside, which they were kind enough to send to HoBo Towers for a spot of reviewage.
It is next to impossible to form an accurate opinion on the merits of a band based on three songs, and that is all you get on Upside, so I'll reserve my final judgment until I have heard more Mendoza music.
The first track on Upside is End of The World, it is in a kind of nu-glam-rock tune, and I like it allot. It reminds me a fair bit of Imperial Teen (on the Mendoza press release it says; "[Mendoza] have been compared to Fugazi, Husker Du, The Police and Queens Of the Stone Age" so I guess they can now add Imperial Teen to the list).
The second track, Walking Through Walls, is a touch more metal than End of The World, but I find it less enjoyable. Which is a bit strange considering I am very metal in my musical preferences.
The third track is You You You, unfortunately the backing vocals on the corus of this track drove me deeply mental. I just could not enjoy the track because of this. I feel this may be down to a problem in the mixing and no down to any particular fault of the band, but none the less it spoilt the track for me.
Upside has definitely made me want to hear more from Mendoza, and when I do I'll add to this section.
