The Bluetones DeMontfort University Arena 25.10.00 We had hoped to review support band the Webb Brothers as well, but as we arrived just in time to hear them say thankyou and goodnight, that didn't give us much to judge them on. Except that they are quite good at saying thankyou and goodnight. The Bluetones then . The last time I saw the Bluetones was on their first album tour in this very arena. And they were less than exciting. So my expectations for this gig were less than high. They come on all suited and booted looking pretty cool and Mark Morriss greets the fairly sizeable if not sold out crowd with "We are the Bluetones, you must be Leicester", who respond enthusiastically. Projections on the backdrop read 'Applause' after songs and ‘Intermission’ during the proper old style intermission (a good idea and one more bands should adopt). The suits are shed for the second half, replaced with casual clobber. I am pleased to say that they are a lot better than last time, the songs more polished and more importantly more communicative with the crowd. They play material from all three albums, the best of it coming from the first and third. The Bluetones of today exude a kind of mod cool when they could just appear like Britpop refugees, but somehow they have managed to transcend said fad.
